There are certain things I remember, from grade school, that I wonder why I still remember them. For example, I remember that Lincoln was born on February 12 and Washington was born on February 22. It has been since 1971 that these were combined into one holiday, so why do I still remember them. Another one just happened and that was Flag Day, June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Why do I remember that? A flag is a powerful symbol representing a nation’s identity, history, values, and cultural heritage through colors, shapes, and emblems.

“In biblical literature, the banner or flag serves as a powerful symbol representing identity, unity, and divine protection and love. The Hebrew word for banner, “נֵס” (nes), often signifies a standard or ensign raised high for all to see, serving as a rallying point for God’s people.” (Bible Hub)

Here are some scriptures that provide for us the use the banner to tell us about our relationship with God.

Divine Protection and Victory – In Exodus 17.15, after the Israelites’ victory over the Amalekites, Moses built an altar and named it “The LORD Is My Banner.” The banner, in this context, was not merely a physical object but a representation of God’s presence and power and victory in battle. For us it reminds us that no matter what struggle or challenge we face, God is with us and will give us the strength to endure and the power to overcome it.

Love and Commitment – In the Song of Solomon, the banner is a metaphor for love and commitment. Song of Solomon 2.4 states, “He has brought me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love.” “Taken more poetically, the maiden rejoices that her beloved has publicly and openly proclaimed his love for her, as if he had set up a banner or flag to say it.” (David Guzik) Metaphorically, it expresses God’s love and commitment for us his bride.  It even points the future when Christ returns and takes to Wedding Banquet of the Lamb. His love and commitment will never end for us.

One of the choruses many of us sang growing reminds that the Lord is our Banner

The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

Christ is the Ultimate Banner – Isaiah 11.10 points to Christ as that banner. “On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.” This messianic prophecy envisions the coming of Christ as a banner, drawing all nations to Himself and offering rest and salvation. This is the great hope we have and the day we look forward to.
