This past Sunday evening, Springettsbury Township had their fireworks display that they set off from Springettsbury Park and could be seen from my house. They were a very nice display. But what I immediately noticed was that simultaneously to the townships “amazing” fireworks display, was a more awesome display of God’s power as the lightning lit up the the clouds in the background. I quickly went in the house and grabbed my phone and captured about a one-and-a-half-minute video of this. As I thought about that later while watching the video, several thoughts came to mind.
First, God wants to partner with us in his work. On this day, both God and the township put on together, and yet separately, an amazing show in the sky. I was awestruck by what I saw. God desires to work with us in bringing about an even more amazing work and that is the salvation of those who are lost. And he wants to do it with us as partners, co-workers. 1 Corinthians 3.9, ”For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” 2 Corinthians 5.20, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”
Secondly, we can get so proud of our accomplishments. We marvel at our inventions and what we have done, while God is so much more powerful and amazing in all that he does. A famous comedian once said in his skit on Creation. “Man invents. God creates. Man invented the automobile. Called it AMAZING! God made a tree said it was good. Man invented the refrigerator. Called it INCREDIBLE! God made a rabbit and called it good. The wheels fell off the car. The refrigerator lost its cool. Tree’s still up and rabbit’s still running.” Psalm 145.4, “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”
If you go and see fireworks, I hope you enjoy them and that you will join in with others in their “Oooohs” and “Aaaahs.” But let us always remember that we are called to partner with God in the salvation of all people and that his salvation work by Jesus on the cross is the most awesome work of all.
