Many years ago, around July 4th, I put this phrase on the outside church sign of the church I was serving. My mom was visiting that weekend and thought I had switched the words by accident. I informed her that it was intentional. Here is why. Over many years, God Bless America has been the prayer and cry of our nation, even by some who are not religious. The problem is, in order for God to really do that, some things must happen. Here is what John MacArthur preached on the topic.

“Will God bless America? Can God bless America? Should God bless America? Are we blessable? There’s a new word for your dictionary. And if God did bless America, what would He be saying about His holiness? If God did bless America, what would He be saying about our morality? About our spiritual condition? Could God bless America and protect His reputation as a holy God?

Of course, God can always do whatever He wants, whenever He wants. But when it comes to blessing, He has clearly and repeatedly set down conditions. I’ve listened carefully to that song, “God Bless America.” There’s no verse in there that identifies the conditions. Nor do Americans seem to be opening their Bibles to try to find out what the conditions are. I don’t hear anybody saying, “God, what do we need to do to be blessed?”

Here are three important conditions for God to bless America:

  1. The nation must get back to the Bible. The founders based laws and behaviors on the Bible. But as a nation, we have moved far away from the Bible. This is seen in the many decisions and immoral behaviors we see in society today. We need to get back to studying God’s word.
  2. When we study God’s word, we see God. We learn about God. We learn how to have a relationship with God. We as a nation, every individual must confess our sins, desire to turn around from our sinful ways, and enter into a relationship with God through Christ in which He becomes the Lord of our life.
  3. We must obey His laws and His will.

Let us start with ourselves. Let us live in such way that God can and will bless us. Then let us reach out to those around us. Let’s start a movement and revival back to God so that if Christ continues to tarry, America may get to a place in which God will bless America.
