This is a familiar quote from the Allstate motto. I am not supporting this insurance company over “good neighbors” or a “gecko” or a “Limu Emu.” Instead, I want to use this phrase in a more spiritual way. We are in good hands because God is holding on to us.
Have you ever felt like your world was hanging by a thread; like life had pushed you to the edge of a cliff and all you could do was hold on? In those moments, it’s easy to panic and worry and even give up. But the Bible encourages us that as God’s children, we are in good hands. God is always holding on to us. Isaiah 41.13, “I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear I will help you.” This isn’t just poetic language, it’s a spiritual reality. Just as a loving parent won’t let go of a child dangling from danger, our Heavenly Father has a grip on us that cannot be shaken. Whether we are walking through grief, battling anxiety, or facing the unknown, our spiritual security rests not in our strength, but in His faithfulness. The truth of God’s Word reminds us that we are not holding on to Him as much as He is holding on to us. We are secure in His hands, no matter what storms rage around us. His grip is steady. His love is unwavering. His protection is eternal.
This is very comforting as we go through those storms of life. But it is mostly encouraging when we think about our salvation. “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My father, how has given them to me, is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of my father’s hand.” John 10:28
Our salvation is God’s work by the Holy Spirit based upon our faith in the work of Jesus the Christ on the cross and the resurrection. It is not based upon our work or efforts. Titus 3.5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Since it is God’s work of saving us, it is also his work of holding on to us. And Jesus stated he will never let us go. Nothing can snatch us out of his hand. Nothing and no one can separate us from his love. Those who believe have eternal life and will never lose it.
This is encouraging. Sometimes in our sin we are concerned that we are losing our grip on God. We feel we are slipping away. Although it may be that we are falling, God still has a tight grip on us and he will never let go of us. He may not pull us up right away until we have repented of our sin, but he will never let us go.
Casting Crowns wrote about in the song “East to West.”
I know You’ve washed me white, turned my darkness into light
I need Your peace to get me through, to get me through this night
I can’t live by what I feel, but by the truth Your Word reveals
I’m not holdin’ on to You, but You’re holdin’ on to me
IN CHRIST ALONE
