The mother’s role in the life of her children is very important for their growth and development. Many of us appreciate the sacrifice, love and nurture of our mother’s. We thank God for the joy especially of having Godly mothers who instructed us in the ways of the Lord and may have even been instrumental in our belief in Jesus and becoming a Christ follower. But there are many spiritual mothers who have nurtured children and youth along the path of life. They were teachers, neighbors, family friends, and relatives. Some of them have children of their own, others do not. But each one poured into children the love of Christ.

Paul encouraged Titus to help these women. “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2.3-5)

In the book of Acts, we have an example in Priscilla. “A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.  He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. (Acts 18.24-28)

And so, to all you spiritual mothers, here is a tribute poem by an anonymous author.

You did not hold me as a babe,
Nor wipe my childhood tears away.
But when my spirit felt so lost,
You showed me how to gently pray.

You are a mother to my faith,
A steady rock when I am weak.
You speak with wisdom from above,
And show me Jesus when you speak.

For every woman who leads in grace,
Who mothers hearts she did not bear,
We honor your sweet sacrifice,
And thank the Lord for all your care.

In Christ Alone
